Marketing and Communications Lead, B Lab Europe (Amsterdam)


This is an exciting, new, strategic role in a fast-growing organisation working with responsible businesses to change capitalism. The B Corp movement encourages businesses to manage their impact on society and the environment with as much rigour as they manage their profits. The European team, based in Amsterdam, is now looking for a full time Marketing and Communications Lead to help bring to life our strategy for 2021 and beyond to support the amazing work of our local country teams across the region.

B Lab

B Lab is transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. A leader in economic systems change, our global network creates standards, policies, and tools for business, and we certify companies—known as B Corps—who are leading the way. There are B Labs across the globe including Australia, East Africa, mainland Europe and North and South America. B Lab Europe coordinates the network of its nine country partners (in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Benelux, Germany, Denmark, Portugal and Poland).

The B Corp Movement

The B Corp community is a global group of businesses who provide leadership through their commitments to people and planet and create examples of success for others to follow. Certified B Corps seek to redefine success in business by putting social and environmental impact on a par with profit. To certify, B Corps measure and manage the impact of their entire business and are assessed, using the B Impact Assessment, to have reached the highest standards of social and environmental performance. B Corps also amend their governing documents to lock in their commitment to consider the impact of their decisions on people and planet.

There are now over 3,500 B Corps in over 70 countries around the world. Over 500 of these are based and supported by the European partners whose activities, and pan European voice, is coordinated by B Lab Europe. Certified B Corps in Europe include some of the region’s most recognisable and well-respected brands including Patagonia, Evian, Chiesi, Triodos, Innocent, Alpro, Ecosia and WeTransfer. There is a huge opportunity to drive awareness of the B Corp mission and brand.

B Lab Europe

B Lab Europe was established in 2014 under Dutch law as a “Stichting” (not for profit). The B Lab Europe team, based in Amsterdam, is growing fast! The Amsterdam based team is a hub for the European and global movement, housing 5 full time and 3 part time staff, as well as being the base for 7 of our global standards analysts and the BeNeLux B Corp team. B Lab Europe also benefits from an active Board and numerous freelancers and interns who give of their time to help grow the movement.

The role of Marketing and Communications Lead

B Lab Europe is creating this new senior level post to amplify our message externally and coordinate our marketing presence across our network. The successful candidate will play a vital role in B Lab Europe’s long-term success by growing and leveraging awareness of the B Corp brand across Europe, creating narrative and opportunities to present our vision and movement to policy makers, to business leaders, networks and to key partners.

To achieve this, we are looking for an outstanding marketing and communications professional, to lead our work across a wide range of initiatives.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop a consistent, ambitious, current, compelling narrative for the B Corp movement in Europe and the systems change it seeks to create through its work and with partners, in line with the global narrative of B Corp and its mission.
  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing and communications strategy for B Lab Europe around all its activities, including its new product launches and key events.
  • Hold overall responsibility for all B Lab Europe communications and marketing output, including campaigns, external and stakeholder communications, social media, newsletters, website(s), brand and project-led communications.
  • Help create our overarching messaging for different audiences around our vision for a fair and equitable economy that serves all, including when collaborating with partners.
  • Support the marketing teams in our Country Partners across Europe manage their own marketing strategies and programmes.
  • Build tools, processes and resources for internal communications, including ongoing coordination with global B Lab partners.
  • Manage press and PR needs for key accounts, especially at point of certification.
  • Create or curate thought pieces, blogs, press releases and articles.
  • Source PR support for media / wider public messaging support, managing media relations at a pan European level.
  • Manage European level media relations, inbound and outbound, proactive and reactive.
  • Manage comms where necessary as a result of unforeseen events (e.g. COVID-19).

At the moment, there are no direct reports, as the postholder will work closely with the European team and the local partners. In reasonably short time, it is expected that the new person will have support to oversee the increasing marketing and comms needs of B Lab Europe.

Skills and Experience:

  • At least 8 years’ professional experience, with at least 3 years at a level with responsibilities for delivering a pan-European digital marketing / comms strategy
  • Proven digital experience is essential
  • Accomplished communicator with a track record of engaging diverse stakeholders including PR and media, senior business leaders, industry and business associations mand politicians and policymakers.
  • Extraordinary research, writing and communications skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong preference for bilingual / multilingual speakers
  • Demonstrated success with a movement-building or a purpose-driven organisation,  campaign, or project
  • A strong eye for design and experience with design tools, such as Adobe Creative or similar suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, or Canva
  • Familiarity with these (or comparable) platforms: Salesforce, Pardot, Hootsuite, Google Suite – including Google Analytics, Slack, Asana, Zoom.
  • Experience with a CMS such as Drupal, Webflow, or WordPress a plus
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS a plus but not essential.

  • Ability to work autonomously and as a strong teammate and collaborator.
  • Experience working with remote teams in a fast-paced, matrixed, international environment.
  • Fluent written and spoken English essential with additional languages a bonus.

Compensation and Further Information:

  • Reports to: Executive Director
  • Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  • Holiday: 25 days holiday excluding public holidays
  • Flexible working arrangements: to be adapted as needed due to COVID 19
  • Start date: as soon as possible
  • Salary: commensurate with experience
